Copper Fish, About The Artist

Dennis first began working with copper in 1998.  While visiting Wisconsin he saw several unique copper sprinklers at a gift shop, and promptly declared, “I can do that”.  Over the next 4 years he created many sprinklers and other abstract art pieces from copper.  A hobby and pastime that sometime seamed to be out of control.

In 2002 upon retirement from a California telephone company, he and his wife began a 4 year journey throughout the U. S. in a 40’ motorhome.  Along the way, his copper art became a small financial asset, and most of all, “a way to get to know other people”.  He still contends that he gave away more art to new friends than he sold.

While in Florida in early 2004, his nephew's interest in fishing, prompted Dennis to craft a copper fish as a gift.  Using a woodworker’s pattern for a Marlin, and a few borrowed tools, came a great passion for sculpting fish.   In 2005 Dennis put down roots in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.  There, his talent and creative presentations for his fish have flourished.  He has sold many of his fish at art and craft shows along the coastal Carolina’s.  His work was available at South Carolina’s own 2007 Atalaya Arts & Craft Festival, a juried event with more than 100 artists who came from all over the U.S.  Dennis' art was also featured in The Waccamaw Times and Georgetown Press.  In 2008, Dennis exhibited at the Piccolo Spoleto Fair in Charleston and other local events.  In 2009 he exhibited at 4 events along coastal South Carolina and was a featured artist in "Copper in the Arts", an online magazine.  Dennis again exhibited at the prestigious Atalaya Festival in September 2009.   2010 was the biggest year yet for Unique Copper Fish.  Exhibiting at several Coastal festivals and the annual Atalaya show met and exceeded all expectations.  There was a dramatic increase in Web sales during the year along with commercial commissions such as the Inlet Sports Lodge in Murrells Inlet SC.  And, lets not forget my "Baby Turtle" explosion.  Keeping a stock of baby Sea Turtles on the shelf  was just impossible.  2011 begins  with several orders and 2 commercial projects.  It's going to be a good year.  I just need to remember that I am 70 years old and need to play golf frequently.

“My work now exists in so many places here in the U.S. and abroad.  I am always flattered by that.  The positive comments I receive from art lovers, anglers, sportsmen, interior decorators, and  friends make my work very enjoyable.  Each fish is individually handcrafted and unique unto itself.  As well each is uniquely detailed and accurate in their physical appearance.  To date, more than 600 fish have been created.  " It's simple, I want to provide every client with a "STILL" affordable work of art, something to enjoy and be proud of, and I work hard to keep it so”.
